How to Improve Indoor Air Quality at Home

Reduce indoor pollution at its source, control moisture, ventilate safely, and choose air cleaners and HVAC filters that fit your home.

Indoor air can collect moisture, smoke, dust, cleaning-product fumes, pet allergens, combustion gases, and particles brought in from outdoors. Improving it does not begin with buying the most expensive purifier. The most effective plan starts by removing or reducing pollution sources, then using clean ventilation and correctly sized filtration.

The right steps depend on the source and on outdoor conditions. Opening windows may help on a mild, clean-air day but make matters worse during wildfire smoke, high pollen, or severe outdoor pollution. Use this practical room-by-room approach to make better decisions.

Start with source control

The Environmental Protection Agency identifies source control, ventilation, and filtration as the three basic strategies for improving indoor air quality. Source control is usually the most effective and often the most affordable.

Make a short inventory of likely sources. Look for water leaks, visible mold, tobacco or vape smoke, unvented combustion appliances, strong fragrances, hobby chemicals, dusty renovation work, pest debris, and stored fuels or solvents. Fixing the source matters more than trying to mask an odor.

Choose lower-emission products when practical and follow label instructions. Never mix household cleaners. Store paints, fuels, pesticides, and solvents in appropriate containers away from occupied rooms. If someone smokes, the only reliable way to prevent indoor exposure is to keep smoking completely outside, away from doors, windows, and air intakes.

Control moisture before mold spreads

Moisture supports mold and dust mites and can damage building materials. Repair plumbing and roof leaks promptly, dry wet materials, use bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans that vent outdoors, and make sure clothes dryers exhaust outside.

The EPA advises keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally around 30 to 50 percent. A small digital hygrometer can help you see whether a basement, bathroom, or bedroom stays too damp. A dehumidifier can help, but it must be cleaned and drained as directed.

Filtration does not solve the source of a mold problem. Small surface growth may be manageable with proper precautions, but extensive contamination, repeated water damage, sewage, or mold inside HVAC systems can require professional evaluation.

Ventilate when outdoor air is clean

Ventilation dilutes indoor pollutants. Run exhaust fans while cooking and bathing, and continue them long enough to remove moisture and fumes. Use a range hood that vents outdoors when available, especially with gas cooking.

Open windows or doors when weather and outdoor air quality permit. Before ventilating, check local air-quality and pollen conditions if anyone in the household has asthma, allergies, heart disease, or other sensitivities. During wildfire smoke or other outdoor pollution events, keep windows closed and focus on filtration and reducing indoor particle sources.

Do not block supply or return vents. Replace damaged weather seals where water or pests enter, but remember that a tightly sealed home still needs intentional ventilation. If the house regularly feels stuffy or develops condensation, an HVAC professional can assess airflow and mechanical ventilation.

Use kitchen and combustion equipment safely

Cooking creates particles and gases even when food is not burned. Use lids, choose back burners under the hood, and avoid overheating oils. Clean the hood filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Fuel-burning equipment needs correct installation, maintenance, and venting. Never use a charcoal grill, camp stove, or portable generator indoors or in a garage. Install carbon monoxide alarms on every level and near sleeping areas according to local requirements and manufacturer guidance. A carbon monoxide alarm detects a specific lethal gas; it is not a general air-quality monitor.

Choose filtration for the actual room

Portable air cleaners can reduce airborne particles in a room, and central HVAC filters can reduce particles moving through the system. The EPA Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home emphasizes that filtration supplements source control and ventilation; no device removes every pollutant.

For a portable unit, select a smoke clean-air delivery rate, or CADR, appropriate for the room size. A higher CADR generally means faster particle removal. Place the unit where people spend time, leave space around the intake and outlet, and run it consistently enough to circulate room air.

HEPA filters are designed for particles such as dust, pollen, and smoke. They do not automatically remove gases or odors. Activated carbon may help with some gases when the filter contains enough material, but performance varies and CADR ratings apply to particles, not gases.

Upgrade HVAC filters carefully

EPA guidance suggests a filter rated at least MERV 13, or the highest rating the system can accommodate. A filter that is too restrictive for the equipment can reduce airflow. Check the equipment manual or consult an HVAC technician before upgrading, especially with an older system.

Install the filter in the correct direction and make sure it fits without gaps. Check it regularly and replace it based on condition and manufacturer guidance rather than assuming one schedule fits every household. Homes with pets, renovation dust, smoke, or heavy system use may load filters faster.

Avoid devices that intentionally produce ozone

Ozone is a lung irritant. Avoid air cleaners marketed primarily as ozone generators. Some ionizers, electrostatic devices, plasma units, or poorly designed ultraviolet systems may also emit ozone. Do not equate a sharp “clean” smell with healthy air.

Be skeptical of products claiming to remove every contaminant or prevent disease. EPA does not certify or recommend particular brands of air cleaners. Match a device to the pollutant, room size, replacement-filter cost, noise level, and energy use.

Clean in ways that reduce airborne dust

Use a damp cloth or microfiber material rather than dry dusting that launches particles back into the air. Vacuum slowly with a well-sealed machine and appropriate filter. Wash bedding regularly and use entry mats to reduce soil carried indoors.

When doing dusty work, isolate the area, use local exhaust to the outdoors when safe, and clean before reopening the space. Follow safety rules for materials such as lead paint or asbestos; disturbing them can create serious exposure and may require certified professionals.

Measure specific hazards, not a vague “air score”

Consumer air monitors can reveal patterns in particles, humidity, or carbon dioxide, but inexpensive sensors vary in accuracy and cannot detect every hazard. Treat readings as clues, not a medical diagnosis or proof that a home is safe.

A simple weekly checklist

  • Check for leaks, condensation, musty odors, and visible growth.
  • Use bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans.
  • Keep humidity near 30 to 50 percent when practical.
