How to Recycle Batteries and Electronics Safely

Protect your data, separate battery types, prevent lithium-battery fires, and find the right recycling or hazardous-waste program.

Old phones, laptops, power banks, earbuds, rechargeable tools, and loose batteries should not automatically go into household trash or curbside recycling. Many contain valuable materials, while lithium-ion batteries can ignite if crushed, punctured, or short-circuited during collection and sorting.

A safe plan separates reusable electronics from end-of-life devices, protects personal data, identifies the battery type, and uses a qualified collection program. The exact rules vary by state and community, so local instructions always matter.

Decide whether the device can be reused

Extending a working product’s life is often better than discarding it. Consider repairing, selling, trading in, or donating a device that still functions and is not subject to a safety recall. Include compatible chargers only when they are undamaged.

The Environmental Protection Agency notes that manufacturers and retailers offer donation, trade-in, and recycling options for electronics. Before donating, verify that the recipient accepts the device and whether it requires a charger, unlocked account, or factory reset.

Do not donate swollen, leaking, burned, punctured, or recalled battery-powered products. Isolate a damaged device away from heat and combustible materials, avoid handling leaking material, and ask the manufacturer or local household hazardous-waste program for instructions.

Back up and remove personal data

Before a phone, tablet, computer, camera, wearable, or smart-home device leaves your control, save anything you want to keep. Confirm that photos and documents can actually be opened from the backup. Sign out of accounts, disable device-tracking and activation locks when appropriate, remove SIM and memory cards, disconnect payment wallets, and perform the manufacturer’s factory-reset procedure. For computers and storage drives, use the manufacturer or operating system’s secure-erasure guidance. Simply deleting files or emptying a recycle bin may not be enough.

Remove the device from your online account’s list of trusted devices after the reset. If you cannot power it on, ask the recycler how it protects or destroys data-bearing components and choose a program with clear data-security practices.

Identify the battery before sorting

Households use alkaline, lithium metal, lithium-ion, nickel-metal hydride, nickel-cadmium, lead-acid, button, and other battery chemistries. Look at the label and product manual. Do not assume batteries with the same shape have the same disposal rule.

The EPA household-battery guidance says waste batteries can be recycled or taken to household hazardous-waste collection points. State and local requirements differ, and some communities allow certain ordinary alkaline batteries in trash while others collect them separately.

When in doubt, use a battery or hazardous-waste collection program rather than the curbside bin. Button and coin batteries also require secure storage away from children and pets because swallowing them can cause severe injury.

Keep lithium batteries out of trash and curbside recycling

Lithium-ion batteries power phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, vapes, toys, and many rechargeable devices. EPA guidance states that these batteries and products containing them should not go into household garbage or municipal recycling bins. They can be damaged in trucks and sorting equipment and start fires.

Bring them to a separate battery-recycling, electronics take-back, or household hazardous-waste location that specifically accepts the item. A recycling symbol on a lithium battery does not mean it belongs in the household recycling cart.

Prevent terminals from short-circuiting

Before transporting loose lithium-ion or lithium-metal batteries, tape exposed terminals with nonconductive tape or place each battery in its own plastic bag, following the collection program’s instructions. Keep batteries separated from keys, coins, tools, and other metal objects.

Do not crush, bend, open, or intentionally discharge a battery. Transport a reasonable household quantity in a stable container so the batteries cannot roll around. Do not leave them in a hot car.

If a battery is swollen, hissing, unusually hot, smoking, leaking, or damaged, do not place it in a normal retail drop box. Move away from immediate danger and contact emergency services if there is fire or smoke. For disposal, follow the manufacturer and local hazardous-waste authority’s damaged-battery procedure.

Check recalls before recycling

A recalled lithium-ion battery may require special handling and may be rejected by ordinary recycling boxes because its fire risk is higher. Search the product name and model in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall database and the manufacturer’s website.

Follow the recall remedy exactly. Manufacturers may provide return packaging, a refund process, or specific disposal directions. Do not mail a battery unless the program supplies or approves packaging and shipping instructions; hazardous-material transportation rules may apply.

Find a legitimate collection option

Start with your city, county, or state solid-waste agency. Search for household hazardous waste, electronics collection events, permanent drop-off sites, or manufacturer take-back programs. Retailers may accept selected batteries or devices, but limits vary by chemistry, size, condition, and location.

Call or check the program’s current website before traveling. Ask whether it accepts embedded batteries, large e-bike or tool batteries, televisions, damaged devices, and business equipment. Some collections are free for residents while others charge for particular items.

For computers and other data-bearing equipment, look for recyclers that explain downstream handling, environmental practices, and data destruction. EPA lists independent electronics-recycling certification programs as resources, but you should still review the provider’s current scope and policies.

Do not dismantle embedded batteries

If a battery is glued, soldered, enclosed, or difficult to remove, leave it in the device unless the manufacturer provides a safe consumer-removal procedure. Prying or puncturing a lithium pouch can cause a thermal event.

Tell the collection program that the device contains an embedded battery. Keep the device turned off during storage and transport. Protect cracked screens and sharp edges so handlers are not injured.

Handle accessories and packaging separately

Power cords without batteries may be accepted as electronics or scrap cable. Cases, manuals, cardboard boxes, and plastic packaging may follow ordinary local recycling rules if clean and accepted. Ink cartridges, fluorescent lamps, and toner often have separate take-back programs.

Do not put an entire box of mixed electronics, loose batteries, lamps, and household chemicals into one donation bin. Sorting by program rules prevents contamination and protects workers.

  • Test whether the device works and check for recalls.
  • Back up needed files and confirm the backup.
  • Sign out, remove cards, disable locks, and securely erase data.
  • Identify battery chemistry and condition.

  • Confirm the collection site accepts the exact item.
  • Transport devices carefully without heat, crushing, or loose metal contact.
